Most cocaine-related treatment admissions in California are not from powdered cocaine that is snorted (as often depicted in media coverage of the Los Angeles party scene), but rather crack cocaine that is smoked. There were 15,951 patients admitted for crack cocaine treatment in California in 2008, whereas there were only 3,932 patients admitted for powered cocaine (rarely intravenous injection of cocaine, although this happens). A largely male demographic, most crack users admitted were between the ages of 40 and 50, comprising almost 40% of all cases, whereas most powered cocaine admissions were of the 21-25 age bracket, showing a serious difference in the demographic use between these two versions of cocaine.
